Decorating your home for the holidays does not need to break your budget. If done intentionally, you can decorate your home for any holiday by spending very little money. Read ahead to learn how to decorate your home for the holidays on a budget.

How to Save Money for Christmas and the Holidays

There are many reasons to want to decorate your home for the holidays while staying on a budget. Maybe you want to spend your money on gifts for others instead of spending money on decor. Maybe your household budget has recently changed and you need to stretch your dollars. Maybe you want to trim back on the amount of money you spend on decor compared to what you’ve spent in the past.

No matter your reasoning, decorating your home for the holidays is possible by following a few tips and steps!

Set a Budget and Stick to it to Save on Holiday Decor

The first way to decorate your home for the holidays on a budget, is to set a maximum spend amount and stick to it. By holding yourself accountable to a budget number, you are preventing yourself from overspending and causing financial issues for yourself like credit card debt.

My advice is to take your normal budget, and carve out a line for holiday decor from your discretionary spending. If you need help creating a budget for the first time, check out this post on How to Create a Budget.

I recommend taking a look at what your discretionary spending currently looks like, and find out what a reasonable amount is for you and your budget.

If your budget doesn't allow for buying new holiday decor every year, that's okay! Read ahead for more tips on how to stretch your holiday decorations budget!

Shop Your Home for Holiday Decor First

Before you go shopping at stores, you can stretch your holiday budget by shopping your home first. I have found many things in my home can be moved around, placed in a different location, or repurposed for something else.

Find similar colored pieces in holiday colors. I also like to shop my home by color. Do I have items around the house that are red or gold and can accent my Christmas decor? Do I have black moody pieces that will look good for Halloween decor? Group them together to enhance decor you already have for the holidays.

DIY pieces. Another way to repurpose and save money on decor for the holidays is by taking something from your home and DIY-ing to something else. If you have old canvas paintings from a random wine and canvas night, paint over them in monochromatic colors for fall. Do you have an old wreath with faded greenery? Remove the leaves and start over!

Check out Nature for Affordable Holiday Decor

Turning to nature is a great way to decorate your home for the holidays on a budget. The sky is the limit when it comes to different ways you can use items outside for holiday decor. Here are some of my favorite ways.

Pinecones look great grouped together in a bowl or hurricane vase. You can spray paint them white to fit winter decor, or use them with pumpkins to create a beautiful fall tablescape.

Here are some other ways to utilize nature in holiday decor:

    • Corn stalks gathered together in a shock to make a welcoming patio
    • Dried corn kernels in a hurricane for a tablescape
    • Twigs or branches gathered together in a vase, hurricane, metal or clay bucket look great in fall—add lights and greenery to make it festive for winter holidays
    • Evergreen branches on mantles, tables or the front door bring the Christmas spirit inside
    • Dried orange slices strung with cranberries make a colorful and fragrant garland

Do a Decor Swap with your Friends

Instead of purchasing new decor every season and holiday, swapping decor with your friends and family will save you loads of money and stretch your budget.

With a decor swap, everyone will get new pieces for their home that will feel new and different, yet you will not spend any money on new things.

Gather your girlfriends or family members and bring items that you would like to share with others. You can swap for the season and give back to the original owner, or you can do another swap with other friends.

    Shop Secondhand for Holiday Decor

This is my go-to way to save money on holiday decor. By thrifting or shopping second hand, you can purchase holiday decor at an extreme discount.

Every time I shop at thrift stores, I alwaye see holiday decor—especially Christmas decor like garland, lights and candles.

Thrifting makes it easy to get creative and repurpose items from their original purpose into something that fits the our design style.

There are so many ways to stretch your budget and have a beautiful home for the holidays. I'd love to hear your favorite ways to decorate on a budget!
