Gluten-free apple crumble is a great fall dessert recipe to use up all the season’s apple harvest. Serve as a Thanksgiving dessert or any occasion when you need a bit of apples, cinnamon and sugar in your life.
There are a few reasons I love this gluten-free apple crumble recipe:
- It’s so simple to make
- The combo of apples, sugar and cinnamon taste amazing
- It is the perfect fall dessert!
What is the Difference Between Gluten-free Apple Crumble and Gluten-free Apple Crisp?
If you’re wondering if there’s any difference between apple crumble and apple crisp, you’ll be happy to know there’s no difference! It’s the same dessert with just a different name. Some say tomato, others say tomatoe.
What I love about gluten-free apple crumble is how easy it is to make. Apple crumble has all the same great flavors as apple pie, but instead of laboring over the crust, you can quickly mix the ingredients, and have all the apple-cinnamon-sugar goodness in a fraction of the time.
What are the Best Apples to Use in Gluten-free Apple Crumble?
You can use any apples you’d like when you’re making gluten-free apple crumble, but I definitely think there is a best apple option!
Whenever I make this dessert, I prefer to use Granny Smith apples. I choose to use Granny Smith apples because I like the crispness of the apple as well as the tart-sweet flavor.
What do I Need to Make a Gluten-free Apple Crumble?
All the ingredients in this apple dessert are very easy to find at any grocery store. Here are all the ingredients and tools you will need.
Ingredients in Gluten-Free Apple Crumble
- Apples: I use granny smith apples
- Gluten-Free Flour: Feel free to use any flour you’d like for this recipe, but if you’re wanting to keep your apple crumble gluten-free, I recommend Namaste Flour. It has been my favorite flour to use, and I like the texture of the finished dessert with this flour.
- Old Fashioned Oats: do not use quick oats for this recipe–make sure they are old fashioned oats
- Lemon juice: Lemon juice preserves the apples after they’ve been peeled and sliced, and keeps them from turning brown
- Brown sugar
- Nutmeg
- Cinnamon
- Butter:
Equipment Needed to Make Gluten-Free Apple Crumble
- Bowls: One large mixing bowl, and one medium mixing bowl. I have a mixing bowl set very similar to this one.
- 9x13 baking dish: I have both metal and glass baking dishes, and I prefer to make this apple crumble recipe in a glass baking dish. I just have a simple Pyrex baking dish like this one, but any baking dish will work.
- Pastry Cutter: at the end of this recipe, chunks of butter are added, and it’s best to cut them in. In a pinch you can use two knives, but I recommend a pastry cutter similar to this one.
